RE: ATWATER VILLAGE PARKING ORDINANCE

Dear City Attorney Trutanich,

Currently your office has been tasked with finalizing the Atwater Village Parking Credit Ordinance (Council File: 09-0035). The purpose of said ordinance is to create a community specific “parking credit” system for Glendale Blvd to ease parking requirements for new or change-of-use businesses. This is done identifying underused public parking spaces and allowing these businesses to purchase “parking credits” in lieu of building more spaces onsite.

Our community considers this ordinance crucial to revitalize our “main street” business district, Glendale Blvd. Since 2008 this small business corridor has suffered an economic downturn, which has caused business turnover and storefront vacancies. In addition, this ordinance is essential for the opening of two new businesses that would greatly help revitalize this business corridor. These businesses are currently waiting for the passage of this ordinance to satisfy their change-of-use parking requirements.

As our elected representative we urge to take all necessary action to expedite the completion of this ordinance.

Sincerely,

WIND BROUGHT DOWN POWER LINES BUT NOT THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!

The 20th Annual Atwater Village Tree Lighting spectacular harkened back to its humble roots today when power outages left a large portion of Atwater Village in the dark. The ceremony was scaled back to a simple gathering filled with Christmas Spirit.

Los Angeles, CA – The  20th Annual Atwater Village Tree Lighting holiday ceremony presented by Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce and Atwater Neighborhood Council was nearly canceled due to a wind advisory. A windstorm on November 30, 2011 knocked down trees, power lines and left areas of Los Angeles in the dark. A good portion of Atwater Village also suffered from the blackout. Community leaders scaled back the event to one with simple caroling, hot chocolate and neighbors in the darkened Wells Fargo Bank parking lot (3250 Glendale Boulevard, 90039). The star of the event is located in the middle of the bustling business corridor of Glendale Boulevard. The majestic 50 year-old California Redwood Tree that towers 80 feet in the air was left unscathed by the winds. The tree adorned with strings of holiday light and ornaments served as a beacon of community pride. The wind had left the decorations intact.

A warm round of applause occurred when the tree was lit. The darkened street proved a perfect backdrop for the eco-friendly LED lit tree. Hundreds of residents attended. They sang carols, drank hot chocolate and remembered fondly of the first tree lighting in 1991. The tradition was initiated by the Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce but has expanded with the active involvement of the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council as well as community groups, businesses, religious institutions, individual volunteers and the City of Los Angeles. This year the community embraced the humble roots of the tree lighting with laughter, warmth and Christmas Spirit.

ATWATER VILLAGE TREE LIGHTING UPDATE – 12/01/2011 – 1:38PM

20 years ago today a small group of Atwater Village residents and business owners met on Glendale Blvd to sing carols and light the “Charlie Brown” redwood tree. Today, we will honor our first tree lighting event by following that tradition. Due to the ongoing high wind advisory and the loss of electrical power at the Wells Fargo Branch the large Tree Lighting Ceremony at the bank parking lot has been canceled. Instead we invite you for some hot chocolate, caroling and informal tree lighting at 5:30pm. Shortly there after, we encourage everyone to celebrate the tree lighting from the comfort of your favorite local restaurant.
